Read the poem at upper left, then find its scenes in turn: the temple on the far shore, the maple and fishing boats, and the traveler’s boat half hidden below.
At upper left Taiga copied out a famous poem by Zhang Ji, a Chinese poet of the 700s. After moonset, under a frosty sky full of cawing crows, a traveler lies awake in his boat near a maple on the bank and the lights of fishing boats, and hears the midnight bell of Hanshan Temple beyond the walls of Gusu. Taiga paints each part: the boat in dense foliage below, a maple tree and two fishing boats out on the river, the temple far off.
