Follow the slanting chalk lines across the back of the coat, then notice how few marks describe the hat and the face.
This black chalk drawing studies Eugène Lamy, a close friend of Caillebotte, for a painting of 1893 in which the two men talk on the bank of the Seine in winter. Quick diagonal marks show light and shadow falling on his jacket. Caillebotte and Lamy shared a love of sailing.
