Follow the adult’s hands as they steady the child and wash a foot, then notice the steep view down onto the patterned floor.
Cassatt brings the viewer close to a moment of practical care. The high viewpoint and insistent patterns reflect her engagement with Japanese art in the 1890s. First exhibited in 1893, this became the first Cassatt painting acquired by the Art Institute when it entered the collection in 1910.
