Zhu Da

1626–c. 1705 · Chinese painting: Qing · 3 works

Zhu Da (1626 to about 1705), who also signed as Bada Shanren, belonged to the Ming imperial family. When the Manchus founded the Qing dynasty in 1644 he lost his rank as a prince and took refuge in a monastery. Rejecting convention for personal expression, he painted fish, birds, flowers and rocks in ambiguous compositions; later Shanghai painters admired him.
