Vilhelm Hammershøi
1864–1916 · 7 works
Vilhelm Hammershøi repeatedly painted the rooms of the Copenhagen homes he shared with his wife, Ida. Windows, doors, tables, and seated figures became subjects he could revisit from different positions and in changing light. Muted colors bring small differences in tone and surface into view. His interiors leave the viewer room to interpret a figure’s stillness or an empty doorway, without supplying a clear narrative. Moving between these interiors and his paintings of city buildings reveals a recurring attention to the geometry of inhabited spaces.
