Sir Joshua Reynolds
1723–1792 · Neoclassicism · 3 works
Joshua Reynolds, born at Plympton in Devon, was the leading English portraitist of the 1700s. Apprenticed to the London portraitist Thomas Hudson, he spent 1749 to 1752 mainly in Italy and then set up in London. His study of ancient and Renaissance art, and of Rembrandt, Rubens and Van Dyck, brought new variety and dignity to British portraiture.
