Seated Female Nude (Self-Portrait?), Paula Modersohn-Becker
Self-portrait, c. 1899

Paula Modersohn-Becker

1876–1907 · 4 works

Paula Modersohn-Becker painted people around her in Worpswede, a village in northern Germany, and repeatedly traveled to Paris to study art. Her subjects included older women, children, herself, and arrangements of ordinary objects. She gave these familiar subjects a directness that did not depend on idealized beauty. Drawings, prints, and still lifes offer different ways into that search: a profile can be built from a firm silhouette, while a vase and flowers become an arrangement of weight, color, and pattern.
