Jean Baptiste Greuze
1725–1805 · Neoclassicism · 6 works
Jean-Baptiste Greuze became celebrated for sentimental pictures of village life, part of the cult of sensibility in late 1700s France and of the rise of the bourgeois novel and drama. His scenes of daily life were meant to be morally uplifting, a sober answer to the playful art of Boucher. He was also an accomplished portraitist.
