Jan Both
c. 1618–1652 · Dutch Golden Age · 6 works
Jan Both of Utrecht was the main pioneer of Italianate landscape in 1600s Holland. He was in Rome by 1638 and back in Utrecht about 1641, and he took from Claude the light of the Roman countryside. Dutch patricians preferred his landscapes to native Dutch views, and his style shaped the work of Aelbert Cuyp and Nicolaes Berchem.
