Israhel van Meckenem, the younger

c. 1440/45–1503 · Late Gothic and Early Renaissance · 8 works

Israhel van Meckenem the Younger, a German engraver who died in 1503, was a prolific printmaker and a copyist of other engravers’ prints. His own Passion series of about 1480, made without borrowing from contemporaries such as Martin Schongauer, was much collected: at least 40 complete sets survive, some colored by hand and some even gilded.

Martin Schongauer, a goldsmith’s son from Colmar who was also a painter, made 116 engravings from about 1470, signed with his initials, and they spread his designs across Europe. Israhel van Meckenem, a prolific engraver of the same years, copied 58 of them, yet also invented his own Passion scenes, couples and ornament.
