Portrait of Madame Matisse. The Green Stripe, Henri Matisse
Portrait of Madame Matisse. The Green Stripe, 1905

Henri Matisse

1869–1954 · Fauvism · 2 works

Matisse used color to organize a painting as well as describe its subject. In his Fauvist portraits, unexpected contrasts replace naturalistic light and shadow. The experiments he developed with Derain in 1905 helped establish Fauvism, drawing on earlier lessons from Signac and Cross.
