Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec

1864–1901 · Post-Impressionism · 13 works

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec made the performers and audiences of modern Paris central to his work. Paintings and printed posters show the shared world of cafés, dance halls, and circuses, while different formats call for different kinds of attention. A poster needs a figure to register quickly; a painted group can sustain a slower search through glances and gestures. At the Moulin Rouge brings together people from his circle under conspicuous artificial light. The cropped figures and unexpected colors make the act of looking feel as unsettled as the busy interior itself.
