George Romney’s reputation as a portraitist rivaled that of Joshua Reynolds and Thomas Gainsborough. After two years in Italy, from 1773 to 1775, he drew with a new freedom, and he often posed his society sitters outdoors in classical dress. He longed to be a history painter, and made hundreds of drawings of scenes from Shakespeare, Milton and ancient myth.
