Frederic Edwin Church

1826–1900 · 8 works

Frederic Edwin Church transformed travel and close observation into expansive landscape paintings. A pupil of Thomas Cole, he visited South America with the naturalist Alexander von Humboldt’s writings in mind, studying how plants, terrain, and climate formed an interconnected world. Finished paintings brought selected observations together in the studio. Their dramatic light and enormous distances offered viewers both spectacle and ideas about nature’s power. View of Cotopaxi is one example: the Ecuadorian volcano becomes the center of a composed vision, shaped by the scientific, religious, and political outlooks of his time.
