Approaching Storm, Eugène Louis Boudin
Approaching Storm, 1864

Eugène Louis Boudin

1824–1898 · Impressionism · 15 works

Eugène Boudin painted the northern French coast as a place of work, weather, and fashionable leisure. Harbors, sailing vessels, and beach visitors share his attention with the sky. Small figures often remain lightly described beneath a much larger expanse of cloud and changing light. Born in Honfleur and active in Le Havre, he introduced the young Claude Monet to painting outdoors. His beach pictures also record a changing society, as visitors from Paris brought their clothes, conversations, and customs to the developing resorts of Normandy.
