A Wounded Danish Soldier, Elisabeth Jerichau Baumann
A Wounded Danish Soldier, 1865

Elisabeth Jerichau Baumann

1819–1881 · 10 works

Elisabeth Jerichau Baumann worked across portraits and narrative paintings, bringing an international outlook to nineteenth-century Danish art. Her travels in Greece, Turkey, and Egypt supplied subjects that she interpreted through her own European perspective. A Wounded Danish Soldier turns to a different kind of encounter. Painted after Denmark’s defeat in the war of 1864, it shows a recovering man beside a woman reading to him. Their meeting hands and the light at the window draw attention to care, vulnerability, and the aftermath of war.
