Childe Hassam

1859–1935 · Impressionism · 7 works

Childe Hassam brought the broken brushwork and bright light of Impressionism to American streets and coastal places. During study in Paris, he explored modern subjects as well as new ways of applying color. After settling in New York, city views shared his attention with repeated summer visits to New England. Appledore Island, where the poet Celia Thaxter gathered artists and writers, offered gardens, rocks, and changing sea light. His paintings make familiar surroundings feel active through small marks whose colors can be distinct up close and coherent from farther away.
