Bertha Wegmann
1846/1847–1926 · 4 works
Bertha Wegmann grew up in Denmark and trained in Munich when women could not attend the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. Her work in Paris brought recognition at the Salon, including an honorable mention for her portrait of fellow painter Jeanna Bauck in 1881. Portraits remained an important part of her career, alongside landscapes and still lifes. Her paintings invite attention to the encounter between sitter and artist: a pose, a glance, or the handling of a sleeve can make a person seem close without telling us everything about them.
