Anne Vallayer-Coster
1744–1818 · 1 work
Anne Vallayer-Coster built a successful career in eighteenth-century France through still life. Admission to the Royal Academy gave her access to the Paris Salon, where her arrangements of fruit, flowers, and objects attracted critics and patrons, including Marie Antoinette. Her skill lies in making different surfaces distinct: translucent water, rough basket weave, soft petals, and the skin of ripe fruit. Even a modest arrangement can become absorbing when small highlights lead the eye from one material to the next.
