Anna Lea Merritt’s etching of Rochambeau builds a formal portrait from lines. The dark hat anchors the face, while fine marks describe the uniform and the turning edge of the shoulder. Look closely at the shift from those dense textures to the lightly worked background and the open paper around the figure.
