Gallen-Kallela carried Symbolist influences from Paris into his work in Finland. Ad Astra combines a floating figure, an upward gaze and an altarpiece-like frame to suggest spiritual transformation. His practice also drew on Finnish folklore during a period of growing national consciousness.
