Find the farmer on the log bridge and the crow perched on his cart of grain, then the water buffalo straining through the rushing water.
A farmer on a log bridge playfully scolds a crow that has come for his grain, as his water buffalo hauls the cart through a swift stream below. Buson signed the scroll as a man of 65. Raised in what is now Osaka, he studied poetry in Edo, followed the poet Matsuo Bashō’s route through northeastern Japan and taught poetry in Kyoto, and he learned to paint professionally from Chinese painting manuals printed from woodblocks.
