Follow the leaf shadows across the white pillars, then walk down the path past the fallen oranges to the reading man.

Fearnley painted this small picture in oil on paper around 1834. Sunlight falls through orange trees onto white pillars and a long path, where a man reads as he walks. The painting stayed with Fearnley’s family in Norway, passing to his son, until the museum’s Old Masters Society bought it for the Art Institute in 2002.
