Look just below the picture’s lower edge for the striped and red garment ends of the hidden painting, then up to the prince on his canopied throne.
The eighth night’s story ends here. The prince, falsely accused by the king’s handmaiden, is enthroned to a fanfare, she lies executed, and his father, in blue, leaves with staff and prayer beads to retire to the forest, as was the custom. Garment ends showing below the picture belong to an earlier painting underneath; the Cleveland Museum of Art notes that new recruits to Akbar’s workshop often painted over pages as they tried a new style. Suraju’s name is written between the lines of text.
