Follow the curve of the riverbank from the bathers at lower left to the reclining figure and the women among the trees.
This painting is a smaller version of a mural Puvis made for the Hôtel de Ville in Paris, which has a companion mural of Winter. Bathers rest and wash by a calm river while men fish from a boat behind them. The Cleveland Museum of Art notes that the wall for the mural had a door in the middle, which made the design difficult.
