Follow the curve of the beach toward the cliffs, comparing their warm pink and orange faces with the blue water.
Monet visited Étretat with his family in autumn and winter 1885, outside the busy holiday season. The beach is occupied by a small group of fishing boats rather than summer crowds. Its strong colors show that a quiet coastal subject need not produce a subdued painting.
