Count how often the dark green and the orange come back across the panel, then find the checkerboard of rounded squares just right of the middle.
Gris painted this small panel on wood around 1917. The glass and the board are almost lost among flat, interlocking shapes, and even the checkerboard has rounded squares, soft green on reddish brown. The New York collector Ian Woodner bought it, possibly in the 1950s, and his daughter Dian Woodner gave it to the National Gallery of Art in 2017.
