Find the white outline of a goblet floating over the papers, then compare the painted wood grain with the gray checkerboard in the lower right corner.
Gris signed this still life and dated it 8-1915, August 1915, and the Paris dealer Léonce Rosenberg bought it from him that year. On a table lie a pipe, a newspaper headed LE JOURNAL and a green playbill lettered FANTOMAS, with a black mask. The wood grain is painted, not glued on, and thin white outlines of a goblet and a bowl of fruit float over everything.
