Follow the fishing lines from the man’s hands down into the waves, then look up past the band of mist to the faint cone of Fuji.

At Kajikazawa in Kai Province, a fisherman stands on a rock that juts into rough water and hauls on a fan of lines, while a companion crouches behind him by a basket. Mount Fuji appears only as a pale outline above the mist. Almost the whole view is printed in shades of blue; the Art Institute points to Hokusai’s generous use in this series of Berlin blue, newly affordable in his day.
