Find the bent dead tree on the left, then drop down to the tiny pale houses at the foot of the dark green slopes.
Marsden Hartley painted this mountain in 1909, the year Alfred Stieglitz gave him a one-man show at his 291 gallery in New York. It became part of Stieglitz’s own collection. In 2017 it hung in an exhibition of Hartley’s paintings of Maine, the state where he was born.
