Follow the angel’s hand to the old saint’s lips, then look up at the two small angels peering down from the clouds at the left.
Saint Jerome, the scholar who translated the Bible into Latin, receives communion at the end of his life. Tiepolo shows an angel leaning down from a cloud to the aged, half-dressed saint, who kneels by his open book while two small angels watch from above. Touches of lead white pick out the brightest lights on this large sheet, which the Cleveland Museum of Art dates to about 1726.
