Look at the white cap with its blue ribbon and red flowers, brushed in quickly, and at her sideways glance to the right.
When this small oil sketch came to the Cleveland Museum of Art, it was catalogued as “style of Chardin” and thought to be a minor 19th-century imitation of Rococo painting. At the museum’s request, the Boucher specialist Alastair Laing examined it in 2011 and identified it as a rare early Boucher. Only one other oil study of this type by him is known.
