Count the silver fish turning in the gray water, then find the bearded man in a turban looking out from among the banana plants at the left.
The Art Institute of Chicago records only where and when this was painted: Bundi, a Rajput kingdom in Rajasthan, about 1740. Two women in orange sit at the edge of a white terrace, and one reaches toward the silver fish crowding the pool below. Behind them stands a couch piled with red cushions, among banana plants with purple flower buds, palms and dark cypresses, and lotuses grow in the water.
