Compare the finely worked head, ruff and hands with the coat drawn only in outline and the dark shaded block at the upper right.
The sitter, Jan Brueghel the Elder, son of Pieter Bruegel the Elder, painted flowers and landscapes with small figures, and collaborated with Rubens. Van Dyck etched his head, ruff and hands in close detail but left the coat in bare outline. The sheet, in etching and engraving, belongs to Van Dyck’s portrait series known as the Iconography.
