Look for the green and ochre washes on the trees, cottages and hills, colors Ni Zan himself seldom used, then for the empty water between near bank and far hills.
Wang Yuanqi’s first inscription says he painted this “Ni Zan in color” in 1707, after attending the emperor and returning to his boat: that year the Kangxi emperor was on his sixth inspection tour of the south, and Wang was apparently in his entourage. Ni Zan seldom used color, but Wang laid green and ochre washes over the trees, cottages and hills. In a second inscription he writes that painting eased the strain of his official life.
