Look past the dark cliff to the pale distance, where two tiny sails and a few far mountains are drawn with only a few strokes.
In this tall, narrow scroll, only 28 centimeters wide, a cliff of dark, wet ink fills the left side, while beyond it far mountains and tiny boats are sketched in a few pale lines. The Cleveland Museum of Art dates it to the late 1700s. Rosetsu signed it at upper left and added his seal Inkyo, one of the names he used. The Kyoto National Museum describes his range, from unrestrained ink painting to precise work in color.
