Find the knitting hands, then compare their few painted marks with the sharper lines of the empty chair beside them.
The garden’s gravel path, roses, and light chairs place this knitting scene in a contemporary domestic setting. Morisot probably painted it in Bougival, where she spent several summers. The sitter may have been her daughter’s nanny, but that identification remains uncertain; the rapidly indicated face does not resolve it.
