Search the bottom of the sheet for the two children half hidden under the leaves, then follow a single branch up into the canopy.
Fragonard made this red chalk drawing in 1760, during his years as a student of the French Academy in Rome, between 1756 and 1761. A tangle of trees and climbing leaves arches over a rough wooden frame, and two small children rest in its shade at the bottom. Quick, looping strokes turn the foliage into one moving mass of light and shadow.
