Follow the footprints across the snow to the women under their umbrellas, then look up at the snow heaped on the gate, the lanterns and the fence.
Hiroshige also designed views of famous places in Kyoto, the city at the other end of the Tōkaidō from Edo; the Art Institute dates this one to about 1834. Snow falls in white flecks over the Gion Shrine, settling on its tall gate, its stone lanterns and its wooden fence. Women hurry past under umbrellas and leave a trail of footprints behind them.
