Move from the broken brushwork in the foreground to the clustered roofs, then out to the long, flatter bands of distant fields.

Cézanne painted this view during his early years working in and around Auvers, when Pissarro was an important mentor. Looking down over the village, he builds roofs, trees, and fields from blocks of color. The comparatively rough foreground exposes the painting’s construction rather than hiding every brushstroke.
