Follow the dark blue line from the woman’s cheek through her hand and bent arm, then compare it with the blue shapes in the stockings and background.

Derain painted this seated woman in 1906, using blue contours and strong patches of pink, green, and orange. The pale chemise occupies a broad area between the bent arm and dark stockings. Color connects the figure to the room without obeying a single, consistent scheme of natural light and shadow.
